Stephen is a longtime Sitka resident, who first visited Alaska in 1973 and moved to the state permanently in 1975.
He is a native New Zealander and longtime Alaskan fisherman who is motivated by his curiosity of humanity and his love of place and has explored these themes in his painting over the last fifty years.

Stephens works, including several sculptures, can be seen at the Sitka Rose Gallery, Gallery by the Sea, Allen Marine Hospitality room, Fait Accompli, several of the schools in the district, the state ferry Kennicott, Mat-Su college, Sitka Performing Arts center, to name a few locations.
